Frequently Asked Questions

What is Yoga?

Yoga is an ancient system of knowledge that offers guidelines for moral and ethical discipline, physical health, breathing, mental focus, concentration, and meditation.

Hatha yoga deals with the physical body through the study and practice of asanas (postures). It is the most widely known form of yoga, consisting of poses that develop flexibility, strength, and alignment. In addition, pranayama (breathing) and relaxation techniques contribute to mental and emotional well-being.

Is Yoga a Religion?

Yoga is not a religion. It is a science. The practice of yoga does not conflict in any way with religion.

What Will Yoga Do For Me?

Yoga calms the nerves, increases vitality, improves circulation, slims and tones the body, improves digestion and elimination, deepens sleep, and stimulates vital organs and glands. Regular practice can also sharpen concentration and awaken the higher mind.

Will Yoga Help Me Manage Stress?

Yoga helps reduce the stress and tension of daily life. Yogic breathing, relaxation, and slow and mindful awareness of the poses activate the parasympathetic nervous system, contributing to the elimination of stress.

Is Yoga Really Non-Strenuous?

Yes, it can be, depending upon the type. Some forms of physical yoga are done in a slow and relaxed manner, while others generate heat and purify the body with energetic and vigorous movement.

Who Practices Yoga?

Nearly 16 million Americans practice yoga, as do millions of people worldwide. No one is too old for yoga. One in five American yoga students is over the age of 55. Yoga has helped many people cope with physical disabilities, anxiety, depression, and chronic illnesses such as asthma, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.

Will Practicing Yoga Interfere With My Other Physical Activities?

Yoga will not interfere with any sports or physical activities. In fact, hatha yoga usually improves an athlete’s performance. Practicing the asanas improves flexibility, range of motion, balance, and stamina; prevents muscle soreness and injuries; and helps build strength and endurance.

How Do I Prepare for Practice?

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing; bring a yoga mat; do not apply any fragrances or lotions to the body; and fast for at least one hour before practice.

Free your mind of any expectations, judgments, or competitiveness. Come to your mat with an open heart, ready to explore and experience.
